Violent political rhetoric online, extending to assassination calls for US President Donald Trump and billionaire Elon Musk, is increasingly getting normalised, specifically on the left, as per a new study. A growing number of people support and even cheer for killings in the name of politics and a warped sense of social justice. The study traces this shift back to Luigi Mangione assassinating UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson in December 2024. A viral wave of memes turned Mangione into a folk hero, sparking copycat behavior to target other figures associated with wealth and conservative politics.
